DESCRIPTION

Celebrate one of the most legendary women of the American Old West with Annie Oakley, a beautiful original fine-art portrait by acclaimed author, historian, and artist Lochlainn Seabrook.

Ohio-born Annie Oakley (1860–1926), born Phoebe Ann Mosey, was an American sharpshooter, exhibition marksman, entertainer, and international celebrity whose extraordinary skill with firearms made her one of the most famous women of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Renowned for her astonishing accuracy, quick reflexes, modest demeanor, and remarkable showmanship, Oakley became an enduring symbol of American frontier independence, feminine determination, and the legendary Wild West.

Born in rural Darke County, Ohio, Oakley grew up in poverty and learned to hunt and shoot at an early age to help support her widowed mother and siblings. Displaying exceptional natural talent with firearms, she became an accomplished markswoman while still a young girl, selling game to local merchants and developing the extraordinary shooting abilities that would eventually bring her international fame.

In 1875, Oakley defeated professional exhibition marksman Frank E. Butler in a celebrated shooting contest near Cincinnati, Ohio. The encounter began a lifelong partnership, and the two married the following year. Butler soon recognized his wife's exceptional abilities and became her devoted manager, assistant, and fellow performer. Together they developed a successful traveling shooting act that captivated audiences with its precision, daring, and theatrical flair.

In 1885 Oakley joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West, the spectacular entertainment enterprise founded by legendary frontiersman William Frederick "Buffalo Bill" Cody. Her extraordinary marksmanship quickly made her one of the show's principal attractions, earning her widespread admiration throughout the United States and Europe.

Audiences marveled as she shot glass balls from the air, split playing cards edgewise, struck moving targets, and performed seemingly impossible feats of accuracy with rifles, pistols, and shotguns.

Despite her diminutive stature, Oakley possessed remarkable confidence and skill, earning the affectionate nickname "Little Sure Shot," traditionally attributed to the famous Lakota leader Sitting Bull.

During her years with Buffalo Bill's Wild West, she performed before enormous crowds and European royalty, including Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Her celebrated appearances helped establish her as one of the world's first internationally recognized female sporting celebrities.

Beyond her remarkable entertainment career, Oakley was a passionate advocate for women's firearms education, self-reliance, and personal safety. She believed that women should learn to handle firearms responsibly and confidently, and throughout her life she reportedly instructed thousands of women in shooting. Her accomplishments challenged conventional expectations of Victorian womanhood while demonstrating that elegance, femininity, independence, and exceptional athletic ability could coexist.

Following a serious railroad accident in 1901, Oakley gradually reduced her involvement in large-scale touring productions, although she continued to perform, teach marksmanship, and participate in shooting exhibitions.

She remained a celebrated American personality until her death in Greenville, Ohio, in 1926. Her devoted husband, Frank Butler, died just eighteen days later. Today her remarkable legacy survives in museums, historical literature, Western art, films, theatrical productions, and the continuing fascination with America's frontier heritage.

Rendered in richly detailed academic realism, our elegant high-resolution portrait reflects acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Lochlainn Seabrook's distinctive approach to historical portraiture, blending careful attention to period detail with a refined romantic fine-art sensibility.
