Elizabeth Griscom Ross (1752–1836), better known as "Betsy" Ross, was a Philadelphia upholsterer and seamstress whose name became inseparably associated with the birth of the American flag. Born into a Quaker family in colonial Pennsylvania, she learned the upholstery trade as a young woman and later operated her own business, producing upholstery, curtains, bed furnishings, and other sewn goods during an era of revolution, war, and national independence.
 
According to a celebrated family tradition first made public by her descendants decades after her death, Ross was visited in 1776 by a committee that included George Washington and was asked to make an American flag.
 
The story credits her with suggesting the use of five-pointed rather than six-pointed stars and with sewing an early Stars and Stripes. Although historians have found no surviving contemporary documentation proving that Ross designed or made the first American flag, records do establish that she worked professionally as an upholsterer and made flags for Pennsylvania during the Revolutionary era. Over time, her name became one of the most recognizable symbols of American independence, patriotism, craftsmanship, and the contributions of women to the founding generation.
