DESCRIPTION

Celebrate one of the most daring and fascinating female figures of America's War Between the States with Rose O’Neal Greenhow, a beautiful original fine-art portrait by author, historian, and artist Lochlainn Seabrook.

Maryland-born Rose O’Neal Greenhow (1813–1864), popularly known as “Wild Rose,” became one of the Confederacy’s most celebrated spies. A prominent Washington socialite with connections reaching into the highest levels of American political and military society, she used her extensive network, intelligence, determination, and personal charm to gather and transmit valuable information to Confederate authorities during the opening months of the War.

Greenhow is particularly remembered for providing intelligence concerning Union military movements before the First Battle of Manassas in July 1861. Her espionage activities soon attracted the attention of Federal authorities, and she was placed under house arrest before being imprisoned in Washington’s Old Capitol Prison. Even under surveillance, Greenhow remained defiant and continued to support the Southern cause.

After her release and exile to the Confederacy, Greenhow traveled to Europe as an unofficial Confederate diplomat and published her memoir, My Imprisonment and the First Year of Abolition Rule at Washington. Returning from Europe aboard the British blockade runner Condor in 1864, she drowned off the coast of North Carolina after the vessel ran aground while attempting to evade a Union warship.

Rendered in richly detailed academic realism, this elegant high-resolution portrait reflects acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Lochlainn Seabrook’s distinctive approach to historical portraiture, blending careful attention to period detail with a refined romantic fine-art sensibility.

Seabrook portrays Greenhow amid the graceful surroundings and fashions of 19th-Century America, capturing the intelligence, beauty, femininity, confidence, courage, and formidable strength of character associated with one of the conflict's most legendary female spies.

Printed in full color on ultra-smooth 80 lb. poster stock, Rose O’Neal Greenhow measures 11 × 17 inches—a versatile portrait size that is easy to frame and ideal for a home, office, study, library, classroom, historical collection, or traditionally decorated interior.

Whether you admire Rose O’Neal Greenhow, War Between the States history, Confederate history, espionage history, Southern history, women’s history, 19th-Century America, or classic portraiture, our Victorian fine art poster Rose O’Neal Greenhow makes a distinctive conversation piece. It also makes a memorable gift for history lovers, teachers, students, collectors, genealogists, Civil War enthusiasts, and admirers of extraordinary American women.
