Virginia-born Sally Louisa Tompkins (1833–1916) was a celebrated nurse and hospital administrator whose extraordinary wartime service earned her a commission as a captain in the Confederate Army. During the War Between the States, she operated Robertson Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, where thousands of sick and wounded Confederate soldiers received medical care. Compassionate, courageous, resourceful, and deeply devoted to those in her charge, Tompkins became one of the most distinguished women of the conflict and secured a unique place in 19th-Century American history.
 
Born at Poplar Grove in Mathews County, Virginia, Tompkins was raised in a prosperous Virginia family and became known for her strong Christian faith and charitable nature. Following the outbreak of war in 1861, she traveled to Richmond, where she helped establish a private hospital in the home of Judge John Robertson. Known as Robertson Hospital, the facility began receiving wounded soldiers following the First Battle of Manassas and soon developed a reputation for attentive nursing, cleanliness, careful administration, and remarkably successful patient care.
 
When Confederate authorities moved to place private hospitals under military control, Tompkins faced the possibility that Robertson Hospital would be closed. Recognizing the value of her work, Confederate President Jefferson Davis commissioned her a captain of cavalry in September 1861, allowing her to continue operating the hospital under military authority. The appointment made Tompkins an exceptional figure in American military history and gave rise to her enduring nickname, “Captain Sally.” She accepted no military pay and continued directing Robertson Hospital throughout the conflict.
 
Under Tompkins’ supervision, Robertson Hospital treated more than 1,300 Confederate soldiers during the War, with contemporary records traditionally crediting the facility with an exceptionally low mortality rate. Tompkins personally supervised nursing, supplies, sanitation, food, and the general welfare of her patients, earning the affection and respect of soldiers and their families. After the War, she continued a quiet life of religious devotion and charitable service, eventually residing at the Confederate Women’s Home in Richmond, where she died in 1916 at the age of eighty-three.
