DESCRIPTION

Celebrate one of the most prominent and fascinating women of America’s War Between the States with Varina Howell Davis, a beautiful original fine-art portrait by author, historian, and artist Lochlainn Seabrook.

Mississippi-born Varina Howell Davis (1826–1906) was the wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States of America, and served as First Lady of the Confederacy from 1861 to 1865. Intelligent, educated, perceptive, and independent-minded, she occupied a unique position at the center of Confederate political and social life during one of the most turbulent periods in American history.

Born at The Briars near Natchez, Mississippi, Varina Howell received an unusually broad education for a Southern woman of her era. In 1845 she married Davis, a West Point graduate, planter, Mexican War veteran, U.S. senator, and future U.S. Secretary of War under President Franklin Pierce (1853-1857). When the Southern states seceded and Davis was elected President of the newly formed Confederacy in 1861, Varina became the young nation’s First Lady and moved with her family to Richmond, Virginia.

At the Confederate White House in Richmond, Varina presided over official receptions and social gatherings while enduring the mounting hardships of wartime life. Known for her intelligence, wit, literary interests, and candid opinions, she encountered both admiration and criticism during the conflict. As Union forces approached Richmond in April 1865, she fled southward with her children and was later reunited with her husband shortly before his capture in Georgia.

The postwar years brought further hardship and dramatic change. Varina remained devoted to her imprisoned husband, worked to secure his release, and later assisted him with his writings. Following Jefferson Davis’s death in 1889, she eventually moved to New York City, where she became a professional writer and journalist and developed a friendship with Julia Dent Grant, widow of Ulysses S. Grant. She also published Jefferson Davis: A Memoir by His Wife, an important personal account of her husband and their extraordinary life together.

Rendered in richly detailed academic realism, our elegant high-resolution portrait reflects acclaimed multidisciplinary artist Lochlainn Seabrook’s distinctive approach to historical portraiture, blending careful attention to period detail with a refined romantic fine-art sensibility.

Seabrook portrays Davis amid the graceful surroundings and fashions of 19th-Century America, capturing the intelligence, beauty, femininity, dignity, resilience, and strength of character associated with one of the South’s most recognizable women.

Printed in full color on ultra-smooth 80 lb. poster stock, Varina Howell Davis measures 11 × 17 inches—a versatile portrait size that is easy to frame and ideal for a home, office, study, library, classroom, historical collection, or traditionally decorated interior.

Whether you admire Varina Howell Davis, War Between the States history, Confederate history, Southern history, women’s history, presidential history, 19th-Century America, or classic portraiture, our Victorian fine art poster Varina Howell Davis makes a distinctive conversation piece.

It also makes a memorable gift for history lovers, teachers, students, collectors, genealogists, Civil War enthusiasts, and admirers of extraordinary American women.
